Redefine The Question

Question of Taste?

I find myself not leaving the world of natural history but increasingly entering the realm of what I would consider if I was looking at popular culture as magic and the magical properties of a substance.

in this case the properties of healing springs, a subject that would fall under the broader heading of ritual use and popular devotion.

Sensation seems to be used as a an empirical means of entry into examining occult properties through self- experimentation.  The aftertaste left in the mouth of 17th century natural historians seems to contain a distinct magical note.

What does the occult taste like and how does it become open to the senses and empirical investigation ?
