Being Brazil

Historia Naturalis Brasiliae 1648

Cover of the fist edition. Its seriously bright and colourful. Perhaps a reminder that scientific description and representation is in a state of flux and yet to become a depiction of sober black and white example.

It  seems a somewhat inviting image, a fertile paradise rich in both the fruits of the sea and land.

Are those attractive long haired natives? I can’t determine that by knowing how 17th century painters represented beauty in art, but from looking at the text the answer would appear to be yes.

Ripe, sensual, inviting feast for the eyes.
